Library eBooks for Kindle

Quilts Amongst the Books

Be sure to make a trip to the Chemung County Library District’s Steele Memorial Library this month to see the beautiful quilt exhibit “Quilts Amongst the Book II.” These quilts are incredible works of art, each one individually created.

The display is sponsored by the Piecemaker Quilters of Elmira. This guild began in 1980 and its membership is comprised of 63 very talented ladies. Besides sharing ideas and techniques, as well as honing their skills together, they also choose various community projects to work on. This year for example, they have made and distributed to the local hospitals bereavement blankets to the neonatal units, walker caddies to long term care units, and are currently making underarm pillows for breast cancer patients.

The show “Quilts Amongst the Books II” at Steele Memorial Library is comprised of 75 projects from full size quilts to minis, to wearables, and accessories. The exhibit will run until November 29th.

New and upcoming books for Kids & Teens

Twenty years in the making, William Joyce's enchanting new picture book, The Man in the Moon, is definitely worth the wait. Joyce introduces the original guardian in his new Guardians of Childhood series. Unbelievable illustrations and a great story for children of ages 4-8.

A book with a lively guessing game format, check out Who Has These Feet? by Laura Hulbert. For ages 3-7, match feet to the animals habitat.

For young adults check out the latest in the Maze Runner Trilogy, The Death Cure by James Dashner, a great action/adventure series for teens and young adults. For fantasy and magic, take a look at the ninth title in the House of Night series, Destined. This is a sure hit series with vampires and the supernatural by authors, P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast.

Did you know the library has a smart phone app?

BookMyne is an iPhone app (a beta version is also available for Android-based devices) that allows you to search for books, place holds, renew books, and more, from your mobile device. At a book store and want to know if we have a book, before buying it? Use the integrated barcode scanning feature to scan the book's ISBN barcode (using the camera on your device) and it will search the library catalog for the book! This and other features are available via BookMyne.

Superhero Training Academy starts Wednesday, 1/25 at Steele Memorial Library. The program will run for six weeks and will include: obstacle courses, rescue missions, and cape making. Registration is required.

CCLD @ Hero Bot Con

Thanks to everyone who helped to make Hero Bot Con a success. The local comic book and art convention, sponsored by Heroes Your Mom Threw Out comic shop and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, had close to 600 attendees; the convention was free to attend with the donation of a canned food item to the food bank. CCLD staff, along with Booker the owl, were excited to take part in the event. This was the first Hero Bot Con; hopefully there will be many more to come!
