All classes are free and registration is required. To register for Steele classes call 733-9175; for Horseheads classes call 739-4581; for Van Etten classes call 589-4755 x3. All Steele classes take place in the Technology Training Lab.

Makerspace News

Laser Certifications

Certification for use of the CCLD Makerspace's laser cutter and engraver will be available starting Monday, October 21. Appointments for certification can be made using the online reservation calendar at:

ccldmakerspace.youcanbook.me

Please place "Certification" in the Project Summary field on the reservation form.

Sewing Classes

Stop by the Tinker Lab to take a class or use the lab equipment independently anytime the lab is open.

Friday & Saturday: 12:00PM - 4:00PM

The Tinker Lab will be closed October 4, 11, and 14.

Upcoming Sewing Workshops
CCLD Makerspace will be hosting a series of sewing classes taught over the course of two multi-week sessions by guest instructor Jeannette Burnett.

3-week session:

A registration fee of $15.00 will cover the cost of materials and all 3 classes. To register, please visit the Steele Memorial Library reference desk. Financial assistance is available upon request.

The Great Give Back

The Great Give Back is a day when public libraries in New York State offer opportunities for their patrons to participate in community service activities. Steele Library is hosting a catnip cat toy making session; the cat toys will be donated to the Elmira Animal Shelter. Call 733-9175 to reserve a time between 10am-12pm on Saturday, October 19th to make one or more cat toys to donate. Staff will be on hand and available to help. Materials are provided.

This day ONLY also, we will be giving $5 late fee forgiveness coupons to patrons that bring one or more items to donate to the shelter. Cat food and cat litter are particularly needed. We will only be collecting this day, and only one coupon per patron.

Glow in the dark Pumpkins

TeenTober is here! We are gearing up for our annual Teen "Haunted Library" Halloween Dance on the last Friday evening in October. Get in the Halloween mood with our teen selected Halloween movie series, or paint pumpkins and play creepy board games when school is out for Columbus Day. Hone your acting and improvisation skills with performer Tim Collins! Never a dull moment for teens in the Teen Space upstairs at Steele Library! All events are for ages 12 to 18 only.

The WitchesAll month long we are celebrating Roald Dahl's The Witches. Join us for a family movie night on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 6pm to watch the movie The Witches. Join Mr. Jeff, Ms. Britt, and Ms. Amanda as they read through Roald Dahl's classic, The Witches, every Saturday this month. Our annual Spooky Stacks Halloween party and Haunted house will be held on Thursday, October 24th from 6:30-7:30pm.

Our book for October Book Club, The Alice Network by Kate Quinn, is now available at the Big Flats Library. Stop in and check out your copy of the book. Read through the month of October and plan to meet at 1pm on Friday, November 1. Light refreshments served. Bookmobile

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar ChildrenThe Bookmobile will be at several events this month including: Shine the Light on Domestic Violence at Wisner Park (make a teddy bear button with Bookmobile staff), Oktoberfest in Elmira Heights (make a fall button), and Pumpkin Express at Sullivan Railroad in Horseheads (make a fall craft).

Our book club meets the 2nd Friday of the month at the Bulkhead stop in Southport at 1:30pm. For the month of Sept we read "438 days" by Jonathan Franklin to discuss on October 11th. This month we will read "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" by Ransom Riggs to discuss in November.

Van Etten

The Van Etten Library is MOVING to 6 Gee St. in Van Etten, across from the Dandy Mart (the former Village Hall building). The Van Etten Library, currently located at 83 Main St., will be closed the week of Monday, 9/30-Friday, 10/4 to prepare for the move.  The Library will reopen in the new location at 6 Gee St. on Monday, October 7 at 1:00pm. Please stop by the new location and check out our new Library!

ExerciseIntroducing a new program at the Van Etten Library:  Bone Builders - Strength Training, an exercise program for men and women (free and open to the public). Maintain and build bone mass and muscle, improve strength, balance, flexibility, and more! This group meets twice weekly on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00am-11:30am. No registration required.  Please call with questions (607)589-4755.

Also, the LEGO Challenge Club returns, Wednesday, October 16 at 3:30pm.  Are you up to the challenge? Which Challenge is next? Join us for club night and test your LEGO building skills!!  ALL AGES welcome!
