August 2012 - Announcements & Events

Amy DickinsonAmy Dickinson will be speaking on August 13, 2012 at the Steele Memorial Library to celebrate the ending of our Chemung County Library District’s Adult Summer Reading Program.  The program will begin at 7:00pm.

Amy is author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, The Mighty Queens of Freeville.  She also writes the syndicated advice column, “Ask Amy,” which is carried in over 150 newspapers and read by an estimated 22 million readers daily including the Star Gazette.

You need not be a participant of the reading club to attend; however, one lucky member from each CCLD branch will be awarded a final reading club prize. Six Kindle Touches will be given away District-wide.

NY Wildlife Educators at Big Flats

FoxThe New York Wildlife Educators Coalition will be coming to the Big Flats Library. Great educational fun for all ages. Please note the special time and day for this program... Thursday August 9 @2:30pm.

Bookmobile at the Fairgrounds

The Chemung County Library District Bookmobile will be at the Strong Kids - Safe Kids Event @ Chemung County Fairgrounds, Saturday, August 18, 2012 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Hope to see you there.

August Events at Horseheads

GardenThere's still plenty of stuff going on in August at the Horseheads Library…kids programs featuring a stuffed animal sleepover on Aug. 1 and a wildlife show on Aug. 8, and all of those who entered the Summer Reading Club are in for a special surprise when you get your invitation to our party, so keep reading and recording! The free adult Tues. movie program runs until Aug. 7, at noon, come in and enjoy our air conditioning and see a great movie while enjoying treats, no registration is necessary.

Also, be watching for our Garden Bounty program, where folks of all ages can come in and sample some of our culinary treats made from our own library garden! Cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, Oh My!

August Events at Steele

Youth Services Department is finishing up our Summer Reading Club with 2 events in August. "Explore the Magic of your Dreams" with Arts and Crafts on August 2 @ 6:30pm at Steele, and Wildlife Educators on August 9 at 6:30pm.

Also at Steele this month, learn how to download free eBooks from the library on August 27th, at 2PM. Bring your eReaders and your questions.

Step into the Ice Age at Van Etten

MastodonCool off this summer & step back into the Ice Age! On August 6th at 12:00pm (note the special time), learn about how cavemen lived & the unusual animals they encountered. Meet the 60,000 year old Neanderthal man, "Moshe." See real fossils & tools of early humans. Play the gameshow quiz: "Are you smarter than a Caveman?"  Everyone welcome!  Summer Readers, stop in to report your minutes & collect prizes!

Mastodons at West Elmira

West Elmira Library will host field paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka presenting their "Mastodons, Cavemen and Bears-Oh My" program on Monday, August 6th at 3 PM.
This will be West Elmira's final program of the summer reading club and an opportunity to update reading records.
