eReader Workshops

eReaders

"I've got this device... now what??" Attend one of our workshops and learn how to download FREE eBooks from your library!

A Monday afternoon workshop will be held at Steele Memorial Library on January 14th, followed by a Tuesday evening workshop at Horseheads Library on January 15th.

Each workshop will be broken down, by device type, into three sessions. If you have a tablet device, like an iPad, Kindle Fire, any of the color screen Nooks, or other Android device, attend the session for tablets. If you have a black and white Nook or any other type of black and white eReader that is NOT a Kindle, attend the Nook session. Finally, if you have any type of black and white Kindle, attend the Kindle session. If you have any questions about which session to attend, give us a call. (607)733-9175

Rotary Spelling Bee

CCLD will be participating in the Twentieth Annual Horseheads Rotary Adult Spelling Bee for Literacy, on Saturday, January 26, 2013 in the center court at the Arnot Mall at 10:30am. The purpose of the Bee is to call attention to the problem of illiteracy in our community and raise money for local adult education services. The Bee is comprised of teams from local organizations and businesses. If your organization is interested in entering a team, the registration deadline is January 4th.

Big Flats Kindermusik

KindermusikThe Big Flats Library is kicking off the new year's Toddler Storytime with Sue Larson and Kindermusik. This is a highly interactive and entertaining show that never disappoints.  Come join us on January 30, 2013 @10:30am.

Horseheads January Events

Join us this month at the Horseheads Library for Sugar Blues, with health coach Gretchen Rae.  Are you suffering from sugar blues? Are you constantly craving sweets and want to understand why? Do you want to gain control without deprivation? Come learn how at our free workshop on Saturday, January 12 at 2pm.

Also this month, join us for our special, all ages, January story times:  January 18th, 10:30am – Local Author Maureen Wright; January 25th, 10:30am  – Tanglewood presents Animals in Winter.

ZumbaHave you made a New Year’s resolution? Now you have to work on keeping it!  To help you out, the Steele Library will be offering a New Year, New You series of programs to keep you on track. Cornell Cooperative Extension will be at the library on Wednesday evenings for a healthy eating and cooking program. You can exercise more by attending free Saturday morning Zumba classes, from 9:30-10:30am, starting January 26. For those who want to enrich their soul, consider attending a book presentation sponsored by the Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition.

The Rochester and Finger Lakes Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will hold an “Understanding Alzheimer’s” Class on Wednesday, January 16th from 6-8pm.

If you need to increase your English speaking skills, join a new English as a Second Language conversation group, Thursday nights from 6-7pm. A facilitator will be present to help guide the discussion. Here's a chance to talk about interesting subjects and meet new people. This is sponsored by CCLD and the Literacy Volunteers.

Quiet Room Available Now!

Quiet RoomThe Steele Library’s Adult and Reference Services Department is pleased to announce, the Quiet Room is now available for patrons who prefer a quiet library environment. This Quiet Room was made possible by a generous grant from the Friends of the Steele Memorial Library and a grant from the New York State Library Construction Fund. Steele Youth Services

Come visit the Children’s Department at the Steele Library for movie madness and some wild and messy fun!

On January 2, meet our wild friends from Tanglewood at Raptors!, from 3-4 p.m. in the auditorium.

Every Thursday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 3 p.m. through January 18, visit your local library to escape from the cold, enjoy some hot cocoa and watch a family movie.  Check our calendar of events for a full list of our scheduled shows.

Thanks to the West Elmira staff, we will also be hosting a special story time for toddlers and preschoolers Friday mornings from 10:30-11, in the auditorium. Join us on Jan. 4th and 11th for some winter fun.  Future dates to be announced depending how quickly the remodel progresses at West. 

And get ready to get your hands messy while we make Muddy Buddies at our Messy Munchies program on January 16 at 3:30 p.m.!

So, whether you need refuge from winter winds or just a few fun things to do with the kids, your local library is the perfect place to go! Hope to see you soon!

Flowers In the heart of winter, we long for color & flowers!

Join local florist Jason Baker at Van Etten Library and learn to make your own spring flower basket arrangement.  Basket, flowers, and materials will be supplied.
