Celebrate National Library Week April 14-20

National Library WeekDuring the week of April 14 through 20, the Chemung County Library District joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

In honor of this celebration, each CCLD branch will be raffling away a "library lover's" gift basket (drawing to be held on Saturday, April 20th). In addition to the gift basket, patrons will be entered into a district-wide drawing for a Nexus 7 tablet (drawing on Monday, April 22nd). Visit your local CCLD branch during National Library Week to enter. We look forward to seeing you!

Genealogical Research Tip

Time MachineHaving trouble finding ancestors in your family tree or trying to make a connection but can't seem to find the name of your great-great-great-great grandmother after countless hours of research? The Genealogy Department on the 2nd floor of the Central Branch may have the tool for you.

As you may know, finding maiden names or Christian names in legal documents from the 19th Century and earlier can be challenging. It is not widely known but, in addition to our traditional print and electronic resources, the Genealogy Department has a fully functioning time machine.  Patrons now have the opportunity to travel time and actually meet and interview their ancestors. However, because we are professionally bound by strict ethical standards not to change history or upset the space-time continuum, we must insist that anyone interested in using our time machine wear authentic apparel from the era they wish to visit.

Stop by today, April Fool’s Day, to try it out.
