Summer Reading Club

I am ZeldaThe 2013 Adult Summer Reading Club is well under way, and we have had some wonderful weekly programs at each of the branches.  Summer Reading Club continues through August 9th, 2013 and it's not too late to sign up. Signing up and logging books that you read makes you eligible for the final prize drawing; a Kindle Fire will be awarded at each branch!

August 12th, 2013 is the Adult Summer Reading Club finale!  The program will be held at 7:00 PM at Chemung County Library District's Central Library.   This is a District-wide public event and all are welcome!  Our program “I am Zelda” is a one-woman play presented by Rita Parisi, that portrays the flapper, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who authored “The Great Gatsby.”  Zelda Fitzgerald, is said to be a misunderstood woman, a woman who was a mother, an accomplished dancer, an exhibited artist and a published writer in her own right. This event is being funded by the Friends of CCLD.

Participants of the 2013 Youth Summer Reading Club will be rewarded with a special District-wide party to be held at Eldridge Park. Talk to your branch library staff for details. The last day to sign up and record minutes to your reading club log is August 9th.

Street Painting Festival
(Click for larger image)

Teens from the Central (Steele) Library participated in the Elmira Street Painting Festival on July 13 & 14, 2013. Our street painting was done in tempera paint and chalk.  Teen Isadora Morgan created the characters in our design, and came up with a lively version of our CCLD logo.  Alex Chichester, Isadora Morgan, Sarah Bogdan, and Teen Services coordinator Doris Jean Metzger painted the design onto the street.  The characters names are: “the Patron Saint of Ginger Tea” (blue, grinning monster), and “Gas Mask George” (green and orange character in the lower right).

Interested in participating in community events like these and getting to know other teens from the area? Join us for "Teen Hangout Time" in the auditorium of the Central Branch (Steele Memorial Library) for music, food, wii games, teen program brainstorming, art, and more! Bring your friends, eat, hangout, have fun!  Bring your laptops and other devices, to connect to our Wi-Fi. Come and go as you please from 6pm to 7:30pm.  No adults allowed without a teen escort, except teen librarian, Doris Jean! :)
