Holiday Closings: The Central (Steele) Library will be open from 10am-6pm on October 14th. All other CCLD branches will be closed that day.

Special Halloween Events

Masquerade Ball for Teens and Adults

You don't have to go to NYC to experience an elegant vampire ball! Wear your supernatural finery to our Central (Steele) Library for a night of music, feasting, and dancing, on October 25th from 7:00-10pm. See and experience Central (Steele) Library transformed into a candlelit, romantic-goth lair fit for any vampiric revelry. This event is for teens and adults only, ages 13 and up. Tickets to this event are free & will be available in October, date TBD.

This event is alcohol free. (We will be drinking from a blood fountain!)

Spooky Stacks for Kids

Join us for Spooky Stacks at the Central Library, a family Halloween party for ages 2 and up, on Tuesday, October 29th from 6:00-8:00pm. Kids can come in costume and enjoy games, treats, pumpkin painting, a scavenger hunt, scary storytelling, and a slightly haunted hallway!

New Research Databases Available

Now that school is back in session we would like to make you aware of 2 new databases available from the Library District site at http://www.ccld.lib.ny.us/db.htm.


Opposing Viewpoints in Context is an excellent resource for research on controversial issues such as abortion, gun control, and capital punishment, just to name a few. This database is provided by NOVELny a program through the New York State Library that provides library patrons throughout New York access to a wide variety of research databases. The Literary Reference Center is a wonderful research tool for researching literature for an English paper, read a plot summary of that Shakespeare play you are attending soon, or even downloading PDF versions of classic literary works such as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Big Flats

We are starting off the month of October with Popcorn & Movie Night.  On October 1 at 6:00pm the Big Flats Library will be showing the new Dreamworks movie “The Croods”.  Join the Croods on the journey of a lifetime in the epic comedy-adventure that "has the magical wonder of How To Train Your Dragon" - Jake Hamilton (Fox-TV). When their cave is destroyed, the Croods set out to explore a spectacular landscape filled with fantastic creatures, strange surprises, and a whole new world of adventure!

Toddler Storytimes with Miss Melanie are in full swing.  Come join us Wednesday mornings at 10:30am.

Tuesday night Family Storytimes with Miss Cassie and Miss Amanda start at 6:00pm with a special program celebrating “National Grouch Day” on October 15.

If you have not done so already, please stop in and meet the great staff and enjoy everything the Big Flats Library has to offer.  Have a great Fall!

Bookmobile

The Bookmobile will be at the Autism Walk at Eldridge Park on Oct 12th from 12:00-2:00.  Staff will have Autism books available to be checked out as well as games, prizes, and balloons so stop by for a visit. Don’t forget to bring your library card!           

Now that the school year is underway, the Bookmobile is traveling to various school locations. Students are treated to stories by Miss Sue during some of these stops and many are able to check out books.

The Bookmobile has added a new stop at Chapel Park in Southport. Southside residents are welcome to come aboard every other Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm-4:30pm.  Not only does the Bookmobile have a variety of materials on the bus, they can also obtain desired items from other libraries in the system. Stop by and say “Hi” to Kim and Sue or give them a call at 738-2476. The Bookmobile schedule can be found on the CCLD website as well.

So BAD it's GOOD movie night: SHARKNADO

October 10th
Central Library Auditorium
6:30pm-8:30pm

Teens and adults! Join us for the second in our "So Bad, It's Good" movie series: SHARKNADO! Movie & popcorn are free. Laugh & heckle the movie, Mystery Science Theatre style.

Movie plot: A freak tornado/hurricane devastates Los Angeles and sweeps thousands of sharks into the air. Flying sharks attack the terrified populace.

And yes, they are actually making a sequel!

Youth Services

October is Fire Prevention Month and to learn more about it, we will be making a trip to the Elmira City Fire Station for a tour of the equipment and to learn all about fire safety courtesy of the city firefighters. Kids ages 3 and up can meet in the Youth area of the Central (Steele) Library at 11:00 on Saturday October 12 for this special event.

Storytimes continue for preschoolers on Monday mornings, babies on Wednesday mornings and toddlers on Friday mornings all at 10:30.

Horseheads

Horseheads continues to host preschool Story Times on Tuesdays at 10:30, and Toddler Story Times on Thursdays at 10:30.

For adults, on Tuesday, October 15, at 6-7pm, Wilfred Peters and Michael Gustina from Corning Investigative Services will be here to talk about their experiences, answer questions, and give insight into being a private investigator.

For the whole family, Horseheads recognizes Dictionary Day, October 16, starting at 6pm. Come in and challenge each other to a game of Scrabble!

On October 21at 6pm, we are offering a Halloween Craft program for children ages 5 and up! Registration is required.

And on October 29 at 6pm, children ages 9 and up are invited to participate in our All Hallows Read. Join us for some scary stories. Registration recommended.

Van Etten

Join us for a Halloween Party, Monday, October 21 from 6pm-7pm. Ithaca storyteller Regina Carpenter will make us shiver in our shoes with her spooky stories. Games, treats, costumes: Oh my!  Families, kids of all ages welcome!  Wear your costume if you have one!

West Elmira

West Elmira Library will host a two day art workshop with local artist, Gaile Beizavi on October 1st and 3rd.  These classes will take you through the steps of creating a portrait.  They are geared for adults and will take place from 12:30 to 3 PM both days. There is no charge but registration is required by calling the library.

Bring your e-reader to the West Elmira Library for personal instruction on downloading free e-books from the library.  Joblink will be at the West Elmira Library on Wednesday, October 16th from 1PM to 3PM.

Story times are held on Mondays at 6 PM and Thursdays at 10:30 AM. These are open to all ages.
