Women's Week at the Central Library

In honor of Women's History Month, the Central Library will be hosting a special series of "Women's Week" events the week of March 24-29.  Programs are detailed below and include:  self-defense, renaissance women teen night, women inventors craft for kids, personal finance solutions, and silk scarf decorating.

Technology Training

Tech Training Lab

The Adult Services department is pleased to announce that technology training will continue at the Central Library's PC lab in March. Here is the upcoming class schedule:

3/12: Intro to Microsoft Word--Learn the basic functions of the most popular Word Processing program in the world!

3/19: Basic Computer--Learn how to use a mouse and keyboard.

3/26: Basic Internet--Learn how to navigate the internet and how to conduct online research.

All classes are on Wednesdays from 1pm-3pm.

**Space is limited for these classes so registration will be required. Please call 733-9175 to sign up. These classes will be offered again in the coming months.**

Big Flats

Wine and Design

TeapotThings are moving right along at the Big Flats Library. On March 3rd, Wine and Design will be here to instruct us on painting techniques from 6-8pm. The cost for the program is $15.00; all supplies will be furnished and light refreshments will be served. Please call the Big Flats Library to register.  

Art Club, Home School, Movie, and Stories

On March 4th, Miss Glen will host another Art Club from 6-7pm, recommended for ages  8 and up.  Tuesday evening Pajama Story Hour begins March 4th. March 6th from 2-3pm is the first Home School class that will be held at Big Flats.  On March 18th at 6pm, we will have another Popcorn and Movie Night where we will show the movie Frozen.  And last but certainly not least, Miss Melanie will have Toddler Time every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Call the Big Flats Library at 562-3300 for more information about any of our programs.

Bookmobile

What's new?

Notice anything new on the Bookmobile lately? Several of our youth patrons have taken note of our ongoing effort to replace our old, worn out books with bright, shiny new ones.  You  may also have noticed the welcome song that we have added to the beginning of all our story times as well as the fact that Miss Kim has been busy updating our decorations to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Bookmobile will be at Book Fest on March 15th between 10-2 at the Ernie Davis Community Center so be sure to stop by and check out the decorations and partake in some games, prizes, stories, and of course, you can borrow a book! Hope to see you there!

Game Design Workshop

DPH GamesDo you have an idea for a board or card game?  Join us on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00pm and learn all about how to make a game and then what you need to do to have it published.  The presenter, Dan Hundycz, is the CEO of DPH Games Inc. based in Corning, NY. Call to register: 733-9173.

Teen Tech Share

March 9-15 is Teen Tech Week! On Wednesday, March 12 from 6-7pm, bring your gadget or a tech skill to demo or share with other teens.  Learn from each other and explore!  Possible topics: Basic HTML, using Tumblr, doing art on a tablet, and more. Show teen librarian Doris Jean how to do Tumblr and instagram.  Join us for fun, informal learning with our library Teen Advisory Group!

Central Library Book Club

On March 10 at 7pm, the Central Library Book Club welcomes any interested parties to our discussion of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. We will meet in the Auditorium, light refreshments will be provided.

Women's Week - Self-Defense Class

Join us on Monday, March 24th from 6-8pm for a self-defense class.  Participants will be taught basic offensive and defensive self-defense techniques. There is no prerequisite or needed level of fitness to participate in this class.  Registration is required, call 733-9173.  This class is not intended for anyone under the age of 13.  Each participant must sign a waiver to attend this class.  Anyone under 18 must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

Women's Week - Renaissance Women Teen Night

TeenTeens!  Celebrate Women's Week during this special edition of Teen hang out night: Renaissance Women (guys still welcome!).  Join us on Tuesday, March 25th from 6-7:30pm for activities centered around beauty, learning a skill, and fitness. Brains, beauty, and brawn, we've got you covered!

Women's Week - Personal Finance Solutions

On March 27 at 7pm, join us for "Strong Women, Powerful Financial Solutions", as our special guest, Shannon Rogers from Ameriprise Financial Services, discusses ways to take care of your finances. During this complimentary seminar you'll learn ways to gain control over your financial situation, protect the people and things that you love most, how to make informed decisions, and more.

So Bad, It's Good Movie Night

Plan 9 From Outer SpaceOn Friday, March 28th at 6:30pm, join us in heckling a classic of so-bad-it's-good cinema: Plan 9 From Outer Space. Hailed as the worst film of all time, you won't want to miss this one! From an incoherent plot and ridiculous acting to terrible special effects and cardboard set design, this movie has it all! Registration is not required for this event. The library closes at 5pm but the doors will be open to moviegoers at 6pm. Free popcorn! Hope to see you there!

Women's Week - Make Your Own Silk Scarf

Join us for a Saturday afternoon workshop at Chemung  County Library District's Central Library..."Make Your Own Silk Scarf" presented by the "Chemung Valley Fiber Arts Guild."  This free workshop will be held on Saturday, March 29th with two sessions at 1:00 and 2:30 PM.   Registration is required, call 733-9175.  All materials will be provided.

Author Visit

Bug ShotsAward winning children's author, Alexandra Siy, will be here on Thursday, March 13 at 4:00. She will engage children of all ages with a multi-media presentation of her books including "Bug Shots", "Cars on Mars" and "One Tractor." There will be a drawing for an autographed book at the end of the presentation.

Frozen Movie

School's Out Movie Day is Friday March 21 at 2:00...enjoy the movie "Frozen" as well as a frosty treat!

Women's Week - Women Inventors Craft

We will celebrate Women's History Month on Wednesday March 26 at 3:00. Kids of all ages are invited to explore and create arts and crafts based on some inventions and discoveries of famous women. Make some scientific "ooze", and a craft that gives a nod to our local  hero, astronaut Eileen Collins...and much more!

Doctor Who

On Wednesday, March 5th from 5:15-7:45PM, join us to share in an evening of Doctor Who! See three classic episodes, enjoy refreshments, and participate in a Doctor Who trivia challenge! All ages welcome (episodes may be too intense for younger children)! No registration required.

Youth Events - Ice Cream Social, Craft, & Movie

FrozenWe have some exciting events coming up for the kids! On Monday, March 10th at 6:15PM, it's an ice cream social! Join us as we make our own ice cream! Next, on Monday, March 17th at 6:30PM, there will be a kids' craft program for St. Patrick's Day for ages 5 and up. On Monday, March 24th at 5:45PM we will be showing the family movie Frozen!

Alzheimer's AwarenessAlzheimer's Presentation

On Tuesday, March 18th at 6:00PM, join us as we welcome Marleah Denkenberger, Southern Tier Program Coordinator of The Alzheimer's Association. Marleah will be presenting her informative and interesting program "Know the Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease."

Sleep Apnea Presentation

Can't nap with your CPAP? Sleep Apnea - real problems, real solutions! Join us for an informative presentation by Dr. Richard Dunn of Chemung Family Dental on Tuesday, March 25th at 6:30PM! Learn the important facts about Sleep Apnea and find out what you can do about it!

Be Creative Group

Join our weekly group every Saturday from 1-3pm for creative, crafty adults and teens! Bring your creative project and work alongside your friends; share tips, art, and have fun! All ability levels are welcome. Knitters, artists, origami, jewelry making, and more! This program is sponsored in part by a grant from !nspire.

West Elmira

Fused BeadFused Bead Craft

On Wednesday, March 5th from 3-4PM, there will be a fused bead craft. This time we will be making St. Patrick's Day decorations and Easter eggs. This craft is for those ages 8 and up and registration is appreciated by calling the library.

Frozen Movie

The much anticipated release of Frozen on DVD takes place on March 18th. There will be a free public showing of the movie on Wednesday, March 19th at 3:15. Popcorn will be provided!

National Youth Art Month

Youth Art MonthWest Elmira Library will be participating in National Youth Art Month 2014. Local students from Able 2 will be displaying their art work during the month of March. There will be a reception for the artists and their parents on Thursday, March 13th from 3:30 to 5:30.  We hope you will be able to stop in to see the work they have done.

Gardening Advice

Looking forward to Spring, we are inviting master gardeners to give us some pointers on starting our gardens.  This will be a weekly meeting touching on several gardening subjects. The dates have not been finalized as yet. Please check our website or call the library for further details.

Crafting Group

We would also like to remind you that there is a group of crafters that meets at the library every Thursday at 1 PM.  Each person brings the project they are working on and there is lots of sharing of good ideas.  This program is free and open to the public.
