National Library Week
Chemung County libraries will be celebrating National Library Week this month from April 13 - April 19. Each time you check out at West Elmira, Horseheads, the Bookmobile, or the Central library this week, you will be entered in for a chance to win a special gift basket. You can also enter at any of the CCLD libraries for a chance to win a Kindle Paperwhite.
World Book Night 2014
 Look for us in center court at the Arnot Mall on the evening of April 23rd as CCLD participates in World Book Night. Each year on April 23rd book givers across the nation hand out free books in hopes of encouraging reading amongst non-readers.

Technology Training at the Central Library
We still have a few seats available for our Basic Computer Class on April 23rd and our Basic Internet Class on April 30th; give us a call at 733-9175 to reserve one of the remaining seats. Meanwhile, we are asking for your help with developing our technology training curriculum. At your earliest convenience, please click here to participate in a short, 5 question survey that will help us develop a series of technology courses that benefit all.
Big Flats
Pete the Cat, Movie Night, Sewing Craft, and more!
April is shaping up to be a fun month at the Big Flats branch. In addition to the regular weekly programs of Pajama Storyhour on Tuesday evening, Toddler Storyhour on Wednesday morning, and the Thursday afternoon Homeschool Group, we will have a few special programs for National Library Week. As a kickoff to the week, on Friday, April 11 at 3:30pm., Pete the Cat will be visiting, bringing his fun songs to life. Tuesday evening at 6:00pm, we will not be having storyhour because it’s Movie and Popcorn night! April’s movie is The Nut Job. Wednesday morning, Miss Melanie will still have Toddler Storyhour at 10:30pm, and the Thursday afternoon Homeschool Group will be in full swing at 2:00pm. Friday morning the sewing machines will be the focus as we create Potato Bags. For more information about any of these programs, call 562-3300 or visit our website.
Bookmobile
 National Bookmobile Day
The Chemung County Bookmobile will be celebrating National Bookmobile Day on Wednesday, April 16th at the following locations:
11:15am-12:15pm: Chemung Fire Hall with carnations for our patrons
12:30pm-1:15pm: Lowman Post Office with carnations for our patrons
2:30pm-4:00pm: Central Library with activities and refreshments
Stop in and help us celebrate this exciting day!
National Library Week Treats
Miss Kim will be handing out special treats at all Bookmobile stops the week of April 14 - April 18th! Check our website for a list of our stops! The Bookmobile will be parked at the West Elmira Library on April 17th between 11 am and 1 pm. Miss Kim will have the bookmobile decorated to celebrate Easter so stop by if you can.

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease
On Thursday, April 3rd at 3PM, there will be a presentation at the Central Library to discuss normal aging, dementia, Alzheimer's, and related diseases. Learn about risk factors, warning signs, where to find help, and treatment options.
Department of Aging and Long term Care Presentation
Chemung County is an Age-Friendly Community! Come join Pam Brown from Chemung County's Department of Aging and Long Term Care to learn about how their office is helping our community's older residents. This program will be held on Monday, April 14th at 3:00 PM at Chemung County Library District's Central Library.
 Author Skype hosted by Central Book Club
On April 14, 2014 at 7pm, the Central Library Book Club welcomes any interested parties to our Skype chat event with Chris Bohjalian author of Midwives. We will discuss Midwives immediately afterwards. We will meet in the auditorium. Light Refreshments will be provided. Registration is encouraged.
T-shirt Redesign
Teens and adults, get ready for warm weather! On April 21 at 6:00pm, transform blah tees into fabulous t-shirts, tank tops, and more! Bring your old t-shirts or choose from our stash of donations, and create a new look for your garment with little to no sewing!
So Bad, It's Good Movie Night
 Join us for "So bad, it's good" movie night at 6:30pm on Friday, April 25th. Evel Knievel stars as himself in Viva Knievel!, an awesomely terrible 1977 action flick. When he's not breaking into orphanages and showering children with action figures of himself or bribing nuns with chocolate, he's doing death defying stunts and battling drug dealers, lead by Leslie Nielsen who portrays drug kingpin Stanley Millard... no, seriously, Leslie Nielsen plays a drug kingpin. As always, heckling is encouraged! The library closes at 5pm but the doors will be open to moviegoers at 6pm. Free popcorn! Hope to see you there!
Teen Hangout Night (schedule change)
 Teen night will now be twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (April 8, 22, May 13, and 27). Stop by the auditorium of the Central Library for music, food, Wii games, teen program brainstorming, art, and more! Bring your friends, eat, hangout, have fun! Bring your laptops, tablets iPods or phones to connect to Wi-Fi. Come and go as you please from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. No adults allowed without a teen escort, except teen librarian, Doris Jean!
Wellness Webinars
This month we will be showing two wellness webinars, presented by the South Central Regional Library Council. The first, "Qi Gong and Tai Chi for Health", will be on April 22 from 12pm-1pm. These ancient Chinese practices are a great way to reduce stress, increase focus and concentration and improve balance. The second webinar, "The Human-Animal Bond and Your Health" will take place on April 29th from 12pm-1pm. Come learn about this exciting new frontier in human-animal relationships and how some libraries are creating innovative services. Man's best friend is even better than we realized! No registration is required. Both webinars will be shown in the Central Library auditorium. Early next month there will be two additional webinars: "The 5 Minute Fitness Solution" on May 1 and "Show Me the Plants" on May 8, both at 12pm.

Art Club
A five week art club for kids ages 10 and up will begin on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:00 and run for five weeks, ending April 30 with an art show and reception. Registration is required, please call 733-9174.
Pete the Cat Visit, Judo Instruction, & Family Movie Day
 National Library Week kicks off with a visit from Pete the Cat on Saturday, April 12 at 11:00am. On Tuesday, April 15, kids ages 7 and up, can come and learn some basic Judo moves from a qualified instructor. Registration is required. Family movie day is on Thursday, April 17, with a showing of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 at 2:00pm.
Early Literacy Space Open House
Come to our Early Literacy Space Open House on Friday, April 18 and explore our new learning walls, puppet stage, blocks, puzzles, educational toys, and lots of other fun stuff with an emphasis on promoting reading skills for the very young. Stop in anytime between 11:00am-3:00pm for activities including an Easter egg hunt!

Handmade Accordion Books
 On Saturday, April 5 at 10am, have fun making two beautiful handmade accordion blank books! Learn about the design and construction of books, the parts of books, the mathematics involved, and more! Registration is required for this event and seats are limited. This event is intended for ages 10 to adult.

Be Creative Group
Join our weekly group every Saturday from 1-3pm for creative, crafty adults and teens! Bring your creative project and work alongside your friends; share tips, art, and have fun! All ability levels are welcome. Knitters, artists, origami, jewelry making, and more! This program is sponsored in part by a grant from !nspire.
West Elmira
Joy of Gardening Series
West Elmira Library will continue its "Joy Of Gardening" Series on Thursdays in April at 3PM. On April 3rd, Helen Tobey will be talking about starting plants with seeds and cuttings. April 10th will feature both Red Knickers and Jon Homuth. On April 17th we will conclude the series with flower arranging and the opportunity to win a beautiful flower arrangement.
Tom Seiling, Wegmans, Bookmobile Visit, and Prizes
 National Library Week will be celebrated with a visit by performer Tom Seiling on Monday, April 14th at 6pm, a visit by Wegmans at the Home School Group on Wednesday, April 16th at 10:30am, and a visit by the CCLD Bookmobile on Thursday, April 17th from 11am-1pm. There will also be daily prizes just for walking into the West Elmira Branch!
Children's Craft Group
Children's Craft Group will meet on Wednesday, April 9th from 3-4. This month's craft will be a Spring String Egg for children ages 8; registration is appreciated.
