Summer Reading Club

Summer Reading ClubSummer Reading Club for kids, teens, and adults has begun!  The club theme this year is science, with Fizz, Boom, Read for the youth club; Spark a Reaction for the teen club; and Literary Elements for the adult club.  As in previous years, each branch will host a variety of activities in the months of July and August and weekly prizes will be awarded.  Reading club registration is available online via the CCLD website by age group and branch. See the branch articles below for July program details. For more information, contact your local library.

Summer Concerts

The 3rd Annual Summer Concert series gets underway this month on the Elmira Promenade, outside of the Central Library. Concerts will be held every Tuesday in July and begin at 7:00pm. Bring your family, friends and comfortable chairs. There’s no better way to spend a warm summer evening. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held inside the library. Featured performers are:

7/1– Three Finger Leroy
7/8– Lucky Ducks
7/15– The Stoutmen
7/22– The Hepcats
7/29– Finger Lakes Pipe Band

This project is made possible in part by the Friends of CCLD and by the Quick-ARTS mini-grant program administered by the ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and funded by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc.

Technology Training at the Central Library

Tech Training Lab

The Central Library will continue to offer technology training this month. Here is the upcoming class schedule; click on the link for class details and requirements:

Basic Computer - July 2nd at 1pm

Basic Internet - July 9th at 1pm

Web-Based Email - July 16th at 1pm

**Space is limited for these classes so registration will be required. Please call 733-9175 to sign up. Some of these classes will be offered again in the coming months.**

Big Flats

SRC Kickoff

Big Flats kicks off its Summer Reading Club on Tuesday, July 1st with a science roundtable exhibition.  Sign up for the Reading Club and try your hand at cool experiments and have something to take home.

Friday Night Movies

ETJuly 11th starts the Friday night movie series. The movies have been moved indoors due a licensing problem, but the fun will be the same.  Join us as we watch ET: the extra-terrestrial on a HUGE 12-foot screen for our first movie. Enjoy the movie you saw as a child again with your children.  Air conditioned comfort and popcorn will make it a complete movie experience.  We hope that you join us.  Movies will start at 7:30 since we won't have to wait for it to be dark.

Bookmobile

Bookmobile is excited to announce we will be stopping at Summer Cohesion sites and summer park programs in Southport and Big Flats during July and August. We look forward to the familiar and the excited new faces of all the children ready and eager to read. We will also be at the Horseheads Family Days at Thorne Street Park on July 12th from 12-3. We will have Moreland the Magician giving 3 performances at the Southport Parks on August 5th from 9:15-10:45 at Goodwin, Chapel, and Draxler parks. Look to our August newsletter for more information about other upcoming events.

Introducing Awesome Box

AwesomeChecked out something awesome from the library? Return it to the Awesome Box!  Awesome Box is an alternative book drop that allows you to recommend an item to others, simply by placing the book, movie, etc., in the Awesome Box when returning it.  Awesome items will then be scanned and can be viewed online:  http://ccld.awesomebox.io/

Edible Books Contest

Join us on Friday, August 1st for the first CCLD Edible Books Contest!  Prizes will be awarded to the winners, voted on by the public.  There will be an amateur category, professional category, a youth category, and a library staff category.  If you are interested in entering the contest, applications are due by Friday, July 25th.  The only rule is that your entry must be edible and book related!  Click here to download the entry form.  Not interested in entering?  Stop by from 2-4pm on August 1st to view, vote for, and taste the edible book entries.  There will be a $1 per person fee to vote and taste.  Viewing is free! Visit our Pinterest board to get some edible book ideas. This event is sponsored by the Friends of CCLD.

Teen Summer Fun

Are you a Nikola Tesla fan?  Do you like making new inventions? How about massages and facials during our Teen Summer Spa afternoon? All these events and more are for teens (12-18 yrs) every Wednesday afternoon @ 2pm in July during "Spark a Reaction" Teen Summer Reading! To sign up for summer reading and get prizes, click here.

Mega Python vs. GatoroidSo Bad, It's Good Movie Night

Join us for "So bad, it's good" movie night at 6:30pm on Friday, July 11th. This month we are showing Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, starring '80s popstars Debbie Gibson and  Tiffany.  Need we say more?  As always, heckling is encouraged! The library closes at 5pm but the doors will be open to moviegoers at 6pm. Free popcorn!

Bellydance Workshop for Beginners

BellydanceJoin us on Monday, July 14th at 6:30pm in the Central (Steele Memorial) Library auditorium. This workshop is designed to teach you all of the essentials of bellydance. You will learn the basic movements, vocabulary, rhythm, and timing. You will also discover the multiple benefits, which include: improving coordination and body control, increasing flexibility, and promoting self-confidence, among other benefits. No experience is necessary to sign up for this class but you must be 18 or older. Registration is required and a waiver for physical activity will need to be signed at the start of class.

Social Media 101: Strategies for Social Media Marketing

Thursday, July 10 at 6:30 - Mad Cap Girl and DinoPuppets entertains us with their "Enchanted World" giant sized puppet show!

Thursday, July 17 at 3:00 - Space Adventure, featuring the portable planetarium from CCC and astronaut games and crafts.

Science Show

Thursday, July 24 at 6:30 - The Science and Discovery Center visits with their fun, interactive science show.

Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 - Become a mad scientist by trying some crazy but fun experiments!

Dinosaur Duo

Thursday, August 7 at 3:00 - The Dinosaur Duo presents "Exploding Geoscience: The Great Extinction Show".

Theatre Camp

Kids ages 9-13 can sign up for our 6 week theatre camp, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00, July 2-August 6. Learn all about back stage, makeup, improv, and have a final fun show at the end! Registration is required.

Horseheads

Story Times

On Tuesdays, July 1st and 8th, Horseheads will be hosting Story Time for all ages! The fun starts at 10:30am.

Family Days

Come to Horseheads Family Days at Thorne St. Park and visit the Horseheads library staff! We will have giveaways and refreshments!

Read to a Kitty

July 8, 3:30-4:30pm - Come and read to an SPCA kitty! The SPCA will be visiting with their kitties to help children practice reading skills. Registration is required.

Lit Lovers

July 10, 1-3pm - Join our Lit Lovers Book Club to talk about books, both old and new!

Gardening Program TBA

Van Etten

Science GroupJoin us at the Van Etten Branch for some science fun on July 7th at 3pm!  The Science and Discovery Center from GST Boces will be here with hands on science activities. While you are here, join the Summer Reading Club and earn weekly prizes and an invitation to our end of Summer Reading Club big bash at Eldridge Park in August!  Also this month will be two hands-on science experiment programs (July 16th and 23rd at 1pm) and a Science and Discover Center Science Show on July 30th at 5:30pm.

BubblemanYouth SRC Events

Calling kids of all ages for Summer Reading Club 2014!  All special events for children will be held Tuesdays at 2 PM.  Plan to arrive early or stay late to pick weekly prizes and check out books as performers will begin promptly at 2.  Kick off with a Science Fair on July 1st and pick up all information for the summer.  Robert Rogers Puppets will perform   “Little Leonardo and the Fantastic Flying Machine” on July 8th.  Look for a Science Show on July 15th and a Science Craft and treats on July 22nd.  The Bubbleman will present his exciting program on July 29th.

Summer Story Times

Summer story times at West Elmira Library will be July 17th, 24th and 31st at 10:30 AM.

Teen SRC Events

Moreland the MagicianTeen events will be held on Thursdays at 2 PM.  They include Spark a Reaction in Your Community on July 10th, Spark a Reaction in your Friends on July 17th, Spark a Reaction in Yourself on July 24th and Celebrate your Spark on July 31st.  There is an ongoing Teen Photo Contest.  You may pick up the information packet now at the Library.

Adult SRC Events

Adult events include weekly drawings for those registered online and a garden workshop with Jabe Warren on July 3rd at 3 PM.  Bring samples of diseases or bugs that are plaguing your plants and get advice on a solution.
