Technology Training

Tech Training Lab

We will continue to offer technology training this month at the Steele Memorial Library. Here is the upcoming class schedule; click on the link for class details and requirements:

Digital Photography
Part 1 - Wednesday, October 1, 6:00pm
Part 2 - TBA

Total cost for these two sessions is $15, to be paid at time of registration. Attendance is required at both sessions.

Video Game Design
Part 1 - Thursday, October 2, 6:00pm
Part 2 - Thursday, October 9, 6:00pm
Part 3 - Thursday, October 16, 6:00pm

Total cost for these three sessions is $25, to be paid at time of registration. Attendance is required at all sessions. Scholarships are available, if you cannot afford the fee.

Digital Storytelling
Part 1 - Wednesday, October 8, 6:00pm
Part 2 - Wednesday, October 15, 6:00pm
Part 3 - Wednesday, October 22, 6:00pm

Big Flats

This fall, check out our "Anything Can Happen Tuesday" events (stay tuned to our online events calendar)!

Miss Melanie's Toddler/Preschool Storyhour starts on Wednesday, September 17th at 10:30am (ages 2-5 years).  On Thursdays, Miss Glen will host a Baby Lapsit Program using the style of Mother Goose on the Loose, starting September 18th at 10:30am (intended for children 6 months - 18 months, but no age will be turned away).

If you are homeschooling your child, please plan on spending Thursday afternoons from 2:00-3:00pm with the Big Flats staff and have a fun time with your student as we explore the world of learning.  This year Miss Glen will be joined by Miss Becky and we have a ton of fun things planned for "schooltime".

Bookmobile

StorytellingOctober is here and we are enjoying our story times on the Bookmobile with new special guest storytellers. We would like to welcome Ms. Chris, Ms. Cassie, Ms. Emma and Ms. Amanda. These ladies will be sharing their storytelling expertise with the children that visit the Bookmobile.   Remember, you can always visit Ms. Kim on the Bookmobile for any of your reading or library needs. Author Skype Party with Michelle Knudsen

Evil LibrarianTeens, Tweens, and Adults, join us on Wednesday, October 15th, 6:30pm at the Steele Library for cupcakes and a fun Q&A with author Michelle Knudsen. Celebrate her new YA book "Evil Librarian" and her famous picture books "Library Lion" and "Big Mean Mike." There will be giveaways of signed copies of "Evil Librarian."

"So bad, it's good!" Movie Night

Adults and Teens: "So bad, it's good!" movie night returns with Sharknado 2 on Friday, October 17th at 6:30pm!  A tornado full of sharks strikes again--this time New York City!  As always, heckling is encouraged! The library closes at 5pm but the doors will be open to moviegoers at 6pm. Free popcorn! Not intended for children.

Adult Services

Sevillanas - Dance Workshop

Come join us for a Sevillanas workshop, continuing October 2nd, 9th and 16th (part 1 was September 25th).  This workshop will be held each week at 6:00-8:00 PM at Chemung County Library District/Steele Memorial Library.  Sevillanas is a Spanish folk dance, danced at parties and festivals, fun for the whole family.  Please call to register 607-733-9173.

Genealogy Workshop

Family TreeNovember 5, 2:00-4:00pm - Tracing your family's history is a fascinating journey. Beginner's Genealogy will help you understand the research process and the way we interpret the information we find. When you're a family history newbie, the prospect of diving into your roots research can seem overwhelming. This course will start you on the fun and rewarding journey of discovering your roots.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • How to fill out a family tree chart
  • How to record and organize information
  • Where to find information to extend your family tree
  • How to search online and in repositories
  • How to put it all together

November Book Making Workshop

Next month at the Steele Memorial Library, on Wednesday, November 19th at 6pm, there will be a book making workshop lead by local artist, Wynn Yarrow. Registration is required: (607)733-9173. More details are available on our events calendar.

Teen Services

Make Your Own Costume

On Saturday 10/11 and 10/18 from 2-4pm, expert sewing and creative help will be available to assist you in making your own Halloween costume. Bring your own materials. Registration is required: 733-9173. Location: Steele Memorial Library Tinker Lab.

Night Circus Teen Halloween Ball

Night CircusFriday, October 24, 7-10pm - Teens (ages 12-18) celebrate Halloween with a free costume ball just for you! Our theme is The Night Circus, based on the book by Erin Morgenstern. (PS: there will be no clowns; it is not that kind of circus!)  Dress in any costume you wish. We will have a DJ, caramel popcorn, apple cider, and chocolate. Prizes for best costume. Prepare for a night of magic, and sparkling spectacle! Free (fake) fortune telling, kittens (read the book & you'll see why), and other entertainment. Youth Services

Join us for our new monthly program: Little Makers!  Saturday, October 4 at 1:30,  this month’s theme is Music Makers, with hands on fun and especially suited for ages 4-7. Come explore and have lots of fun making all kinds of music. No registration is required.

Lego Club for ages 5-12 will be held Wednesday, October 8 from 4:00-5:00. Come design and build Lego creations, using the library’s Legos. Registration is required, please call 733-9174 to sign up.

Halloween KidsSchool’s Out Movie Day will be on Friday, October 10 at 2:00 and for an October treat, the movie will be “Hocus Pocus” (PG), free with a snack provided!

Spooky Stacks is back! Wednesday, October 29 from 6:30-8:00. Kids ages 2 and up should come in costume for trick or treating in the library, a slightly spooky hall with scary stories, games, crafts, food and prizes! Funded by the Friends of CCLD.

Horseheads

We are pleased to report the Horseheads Free Library reopened on Monday September 29th, after a 6 week renovation project. The walls have been painted, new carpet has been installed, and the public service desk has been modified to improve our ability to serve our patrons. This project was made possible through a generous grant of the Public Library Foundation of Chemung County. Our weekly story time programs will begin on Tuesday October 21st!

Van Etten

HalloweenOn Wednesday, October 29, 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM there will be a Library Halloween Party:  Spooky stories, tricks & treats, and crafts! Wear your costume!  Registration is required.  Sign up at the Van Etten circulation desk or call 589-4755 ext. 3.

Join us for a special Marionette Play featuring Janice Koski’s FOLKTOWN Marionettes from Ithaca, NY:  'Mermaid of the North Sea' on Saturday, October 18th at 2:00pm. The library is usually closed on Saturdays and is only open for this special event.   Registration is required.  Stay and make a craft after the show!

West Elmira

Chalk PumpkinThe West Elmira Homeschool Group meets every Wednesday at 10:30am (geared for ages 5-11). *Special appearance by the Science & Discovery Center on October 1st.

Pajama Story Time is on Mondays at 6pm! Put your "jammies" on and bring Mom and Dad for stories, music and fun!

There will be a Chalkboard Pumpkin craft for kids on October 22nd at 3:30pm (registration recommended).

Young Adult Book Club meets on October 27th at 7pm. Registration is appreciated! This month we are reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

Art Adventure with Enchantment- Starting October 1st, local artist Gaile Beizavi will lead children in a series of art workshops, held the 1st and 2nd Wednesday of each month (ages 5-11). Children must be signed up by an adult. Limited slots available.

Bridge Club- Join us at the West Elmira Library every Monday and Friday from 1p-3p for all types of bridge. Registration is required. Call 733-0541.

West Elmira is currently looking for several dedicated volunteers to help with shelving and other library tasks. Please call or stop in for more information.

Friends of the Chemung County Library District presents: Books Sandwiched In - Fall 2014. This month, join the Friends at Steele Memorial Library from 12:00-1:00pm on October 24th for Seward. Lincoln's Indispensable Man and on the 31st for The Third Industrial Revolution: How Lateral Power is Transforming Energy, The Economy and the World.
