Lunch-n-Learn: Rock Your Holidays with a Great Promotion

Digitally Prepare your business for Black Friday and Cyber Monday at our workshop on October 8th, 12pm-1pm. Drop-in Genealogy:  Steele Tech Lab

Come in and use genealogy databases.  Staff will be on hand to assist as needed. Tuesday, October 13th, 9am-11am and Thursday, October 29th 1pm-3pm.

Friday Afternoon Film

On Friday, October 16th at 2pm, stop by Steele Memorial Library for a showing of the classic 1959 film, Some Like it Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon.

Sharknado 3"So bad, it's good!" Movie Night

We are showing Sharknado 3 on Friday, October 16th, 6:30pm at the Steele Memorial Library. As always, heckling is encouraged! The library closes at 5pm but doors reopen at 6pm for moviegoers. Free popcorn! Adults and teens welcome -- not intended for children.

Papermaking Art Workshop

Monday, October 19th at 6:30pm, led by Wynn Yarrow, students will discover the possibilities of handmade paper for creating textured surfaces and unique works of art. This free workshop is open to the public. It is suitable for adults and teens, who must register by calling Steele Memorial Library at 607-733-9173. *The class is currently full but we are accepting names for the waiting list and will notify those on the list if space becomes available.*

This activity is made possible in part by the QuickARTS grant program administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and funded by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc.

Halloween Book Craft

Halloween BooksUpcycle some old library books by decorating them to create a spooky effect, perfect for Halloween decorations (or Harry Potter cosplay). This program will take place on Monday, October 26th at 5:30pm. All materials will be provided. Registration is required (adults and teens only). This program was generously funded by the Friends of CCLD.

Writing Workshop

Write and share your work on Friday, October 30th, 3-4pm, in the small conference room at Steele (all ages, genres, and levels of experience welcome). Participants will be provided with supportive and positive feedback. Keywords are: An inclusive environment, friendly and non-competitive writing, work and grow together as writers,  freedom to experiment with forms of writing, style, and genres.

Teen Events

CowTeen Philosopher’s Guild

We'll discuss ethical treatment of animals and our diet on Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30pm. Fun discussions and light snacks!

Teen Writer’s Group

For teens who love to write! Poetry, fan fiction, memoir, it’s all good! Led by Elmira College teacher and poet, Dawn Fewkes. A fun, no pressure, writing get-together. Mondays: October 19th & 26th at 6:30pm, Steele Library small conference room.

Teen Fandom Night: Doctor Who


On Tuesday, October 27th, celebrate all things Doctor Who. Cosplay, trivia, prizes, themed snacks. Geek out. Who’s YOUR favorite doctor? Squeeze into the Tardis and get a picture taken. For ages 12-18.

Teen Halloween Ball: “Japanese Cute & Creepy”

Teen BallSave the date! Friday, October 23rd at 7-9pm. Wear any costume you wish. Music, food, DJ, costume contest, and more! No outside food or drink. Ages 12-18 only. This is a free event, thanks to Friends of CCLD and the Chemung County Youth Bureau!

Tween Maker Club

The Monthly Maker Club for Tweens (8-12 year olds) is back and the first making session will be Wednesday, October 7th at 4:00. Registration is required, please call 733-9174.

Movie Day

School's Out Movie Day featuring Disney's live action Cinderella will be shown Friday, October 9th with snacks in the Steele Auditorium at 2:00.

Halloween Craft

Kids ages 4 and up can stop in from 3:30-4:30 on Thursday, October 15th and make and take a Halloween Craft.

Preschool Explorers

Preschool Explorers will be on Monday, October 19th at 10:30, this new monthly event is a great chance for little ones ages 2-5 to come and create and learn through hands on play with music, science and art.

Trick or TreatSpooky Stacks

Spooky Stacks will be held on Thursday, October 29th from 6:30-8:00 for ages 2 and up. Kids can come in costume and trick or treat in the library, enjoy snacks, games, costume judging, balloon animals and walk through our slightly spooky Haunted room!

Big Flats

Story Hours & Home School Group

Programming is back in full swing at the Big Flats Library with Wednesday morning story hours at 10:30 with Miss Melanie and Thursday afternoon home school group with Miss Becky at 2:00 p.m.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record®

Join us for the 10th anniversary of Jumpstart's Read for the Record®, a global campaign that generates public support for high-quality early learning and highlights the importance of building children's vocabulary and love for reading. On October 22nd, 2015 children and adults worldwide will take action by participating in the world's largest shared reading experience. This year the book selected by JumpStart is Not Norman: A Goldfish Story, and it's a story sure to please the whole family. We hope you will be here to take part in this exciting event.

Halloween Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin PatchOn October 27th, Big Flats Library will host a Halloween Pumpkin Patch. This program is STRICTLY limited to 50 children and children MUST BE REGISTERED to attend. Once 50 children have been reached, registration will stop. Please call today (562-3300) to register your child for this fun event. Some of the activities include, a magic show, a petting zoo, a special activity, and each child will receive a pumpkin to take home. Weather permitting, the majority of this program will be held outside so dress according. Please have children wear their Halloween costume. This program is free, but please remember to call and register your child.

Bookmobile

Bookmobile at Community Events

Bookmobile will be at Oktoberfest in Elmira Heights on October 10th from 10am-4pm and at Pumpkin Express in Horseheads on October 24th from 1pm-5pm. There will be games, tattoos and prizes at both events. Bring the family and enjoy some fall activities.

Book Club

EvergreenOur book club meets the first Friday of the month at our Bulkhead location at 1:30pm; this month's meeting is on October 2nd. Please join us and be a part of the book discussion for Leaving Time By Jodi Picoult.

This month we're reading Evergreen by Belva Plain, to be discussed on November 6th.

Paranormal Investigation - Fact vs. Fiction

ParanormalOn October 21st, 5:30-7:30pm, learn about the reality of paranormal investigation as presented by Todd Chichester. Todd has worked with STRAPS – (Southern Tier Regional Area Paranormal Society) as an investigator and case manager. He has met with clients, walked through locations, done investigations, and helped review evidence. Registration is required! Space is strictly limited. Call 739-4581 to register.

Lunch-n-Learn: Social Media 101

Join Tom Brown at the Horseheads Free Library on Thursday October 22nd at 12pm and learn simple strategies for social media marketing. Register at: http://bit.ly/STLSa-SM101. This program is part of the Southern Tier Library System's Lunch -n- Learn series.

Zentangle® Class

zentangleSaturday, October 24th, 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM:  Beginning Zentangle® Class with Certified Zentangle® Teacher Mary Beth Schoonover! Zentangle® is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It is fun, relaxing, and will increase your creativity! All supplies will be provided. Note: This is an Adult Program.

October 7th - MadCap Puppets will perform the Legend of Sleepy Hollow at 4:00pm at Teal Park (weather permitting – alternative location will be Saint Matthew’s).

Kitty Lit Reading Program

Kitty LitJoin the Chemung County SPCA and some of their cats  on Wednesday, October 14th, 3:30-4:30PM, and read your favorite stories to them! Practice your reading and make the kitties very happy! Bring your own book or choose a book from the collection.  Open to students in grade 1 through grade 6. Call 739-4581 to register. Space is limited.

Scandinavian Finger Knitting

Join us at the Van Etten Library and learn a different way to knit...entirely by hand. No needles or other tools needed!! Meet local knitter Sandra E. Antipova as she shares with us her culture and craft of finger knitting. Sandra will be showing us how to knit a handbag! Registration is required, please call to sign up. 607-589-4755 ext 3. It will be on Friday, October 16th from 1:00pm-3:00pm. This course is recommended for ages 13 and up. This event is sponsored by the Friends of CCLD.

Hocus PocusFamily Movie Night

Wednesday, October 14th at 5:15pm - This month celebrate Halloween by joining us and watch Hocus Pocus on the big screen!! See you there, refreshments will be offered. This film is rated PG.

Friends of CCLD - Books Sandwiched In

The Friends of CCLD Fall 2015 Books Sandwiched In series begins this month, starting on October 2nd with Flash Boys by Michael Lewis, reviewed by Tom Wirth, Senior Vice President of Investor Services at Chemung Canal Bank.  On October 9th, Eve Crittenden Seward, retired researcher and trainer of quality control at Corning, Inc. will be reviewing A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog Named Trixie by Dean Koontz. River Road Expo - Free Local Comic Convention

River Road ExpoThe River Road Expo is a fun, family friendly, free admission comic and pop culture convention at Tioga Downs, held Sunday, October 18th from 12-5pm. This expo will have an all-ages costume contest starting at 3:45pm.

Guests at the expo include: Bob McLeod, the co-creator of the New Mutants, illustrator of Amazing Spider-Man, G.I.Joe, Action Comics, Star Wars and more; Khoi Pham, Artist of Avengers, Scarlet Spider, Gambit, Cyber Force, Daredevil and more; Ken Wheaton, Artist of Popeye, Futurama, Simpsons and more; Mike Raicht, Author of Batman, Army of Darkness, The Stuff of Legend, Wild Blue Yonder and more.

Many more authors and artists will be present at this free admission convention. Autographs and the entry into the costume contest are at no charge!
