2016 CCLD Budget Vote

On November 3rd, citizens of Chemung County will vote on the 2016 library budget.

In 2014 the District once again broke records for library use. An all-time high of 591,244 items were checked out in 2014. In fact, between 2010 and 2014, circulation of library materials has increased each year. More than 78,500 sessions were logged on library computer resources, and librarians answered 51,969 reference questions. Our staff conducted 2,101 programs ranging from story times to computer classes and had a record attendance of 49,806 patrons.

Worlds AIDS Day

CCLD, together with the Chemung County AIDS Task Force, will recognize World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 1st. The community event will begin at Wisner Park with a candlelight vigil followed by a walk to the library for a reception. Light refreshments will be served. The event is open and free to the public. The Aids Memorial Quilt will be on display at the Steele Memorial Library from November 30th through December 5th.

Come in for a step-by-step lesson on computer use for beginners. Learn the vocabulary, mouse use, and so much more!

Digital Media Lab Opens November 12th!

There will be Digital Media Lab certification classes on Nov. 10, 19 and 24, 6:30PM-7:30PM. You must be certified in order to reserve the media lab. Call 733-9175 to sign up for a class.

Steele Memorial

All Ages - International Games Day @ Your Library

International Games DaySteele Memorial Library will join over a thousand libraries around the world on November 21st, for the eighth annual celebration of gaming in libraries. Join us from 11-4pm; all ages are welcome. Rainy Toad Gaming, Elmira based video gaming entertainment party and tournament service, will be here with Minecraft! Members of the Chemung Valley Chess Club will be in attendance! There will also be Wii, board games, giant Jenga, snacks, prizes, and more! Note: Due to the elevator construction currently underway at Steele, the library will need to close on a Saturday this month. The date has not been finalized yet, but if it is 11/21, Games Day at Steele will be cancelled. Stay tuned to our website and social media for announcements.

Nanowrimo @ Your Library

Write your novel at the Steele Memorial Library.  Tuesday, 11/3, 9am-12pm; Tuesday, 11/17, 9am-11:30am; Monday, 11/30, 1pm-3pm.

"So bad, it's good!" Movie Night

Lost Skeleton of CadavraOn Friday, November 6th at 6:30pm we are showing B movie spoof, The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. As always, heckling is encouraged! The library closes at 5pm but doors reopen at 6pm for moviegoers. Free popcorn! Adults and teens welcome -- not intended for children.

Friday Afternoon Film Series

On Friday, November 13th at 2pm, stop by Steele Memorial Library for a showing of the classic 1940 film, The Philadelphia Story, starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. On Friday, December 4th at 2pm, we will be showing It's a Wonderful Life (1946), starring James Stewart.

Bad ArtBad Art Night

Join us December 3rd from 6-8pm for Bad Art Night at Steele Memorial Library! Leave your talent at the door and be creative in a judgment-free zone. No art skills required! Some materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own. Registration is not required. All ages are welcome.

Creative Card Making

On Wednesday, December 9th at 6:30pm, artist Wynn Yarrow will show tricks for paper cuts, stencils, pop-up, and 3-dimensional cards. Registration required: 733-9173.

Books Sandwiched In: Teen Reads!

Friends of CCLDHave a light lunch with the Friends of Chemung County Library District and local teens! Teens will present their favorite books in a late celebration of Teen Read Week. Support the library district with your purchase of sandwiches and find out why YA (young adult or Teen) fiction is fabulous! Friday, Nov. 6 @ 11:30-1pm, Steele Library large conference room.

Teen Writers Group

A fun, informal writing session for Teen writers of all abilities and writing interests. Led by Elmira College lecturer & poet, Dawn Fewkes, MFA. Mondays Nov. 9 & 23 @ 6:30pm-7:30pm in the Steele Library small conference room.

Cinderella in the Wild West Puppet Show

Enjoy a family friendly free puppet show on Sat. Nov. 7 at 2:00 as Robert Rogers Puppets present a brand new show, Cinderella in the Wild West, an all American version of the famous fairy tale. Kids will be entranced by these entertaining life size puppets!

Preschool Explorers

This drop in monthly kid maker time for ages 2-5 will be Nov. 9 at 10:30.

Fancy NancyFancy Nancy Soiree

Ooh-La-La! The Fancy Nancy book series turns 10 this year and to celebrate we will host a fancy soiree on Monday Nov. 23 at 4:00 with treats, a craft and a French lesson. Come in your finest frocks for this fancy event for kids ages 4 and up.

Movie Day - Inside Out

School’s Out Movie Day on Wed. Nov. 25 at 2:00 is the Pixar hit, Inside Out. Snacks are provided.

Maker & LEGO Clubs

Maker Club for tweens continues on Wed. Nov. 4 and the Lego Club will meet on Nov. 18 this month, both require registration.

Storytimes

Storytimes continue, Tuesdays at 10:30 for ages up to 2 and Fridays at 10:30 for ages 2 and up. No storytime on Nov. 20 or Nov. 27.

Big Flats

Movie & Popcorn Nights

Inside OutNovember is here and the Big Flats Library has 2 movie and popcorn nights all ready to go. Tuesday, November 10th we will enjoy the movie Inside Out and on Tuesday, November 17th, we will be relaxing to the movie PIXELS. Wear your pajamas, get ready for movie fun and as always, popcorn will be served. The best movies and the best popcorn are at the Big Flats Library.

Holiday Parade

Look for the Bookmobile to be part of the Downtown Holiday Parade on Nov 27th at 10am. We look forward to seeing and waving to all the familiar faces in the crowd.

Book Club

The Walk SeriesOur book club meets the first Friday of the month at our Bulkhead location at 1:30pm; this month's meeting is on Nov 6th. Please join us and be a part of the book discussion for Evergreen by Belva Plain. This month we're reading The Walk series by Richard Paul Evans, to be discussed on December 4th.

Kitty Lit Reading Program

Kitty LitCats love company! Come to the library and read stories to the kitties on Wednesday, November 18th, 3:30-4:30! Practice your reading and make the kitties happy! Open to students in grade 1 through 6. Registration is required! Space is limited! Call 739-4581 to register.

International Games Day

November 21st - Meet your friends and family at the library for quality time as you play games. We have a “life-sized” Jenga, Exploding Kittens, Treasure Hunt, Trophy Buck and many more games for you to play throughout the day.
