2016 CCLD Maker Expo

Maker Expo

Come enjoy a day of fun and inspiration at our 3rd annual CCLD Maker Expo on Saturday, May 21, 11am-3pm! There will be many interactive activities and demonstrations, including a Power Tool Drag Race (sponsored by Lowes) from 12-2pm during the event. For rules and entry details, visit our website. Our Maker Expo has something for all ages! It is an event that "celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, technology, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset". It is a celebration of creativity.  It is a free event where local artists, professors, craftspeople, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, tech clubs, engineers, students, and businesses come to show what they make.  For more information and a list of exhibitors, visit our website.

The Maker Expo is made possible in part by the QuickARTS grant program administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and funded by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc.

CCLD's 5th Annual Chess Challenge

This year's Chess Challenge is Saturday, May 7th, 8:30-4:30 at Steele Memorial Library. Youth are welcome!

Technology Training at CCLD Libraries

Tech Training Lab

All classes are free and registration is required. To register for Steele classes call 733-9175; for Horseheads classes call 739-4581; for Van Etten classes call 589-4755 x3. All Steele classes take place in the Technology Training Lab.

Digital Media Lab Certification Classes at Steele

Become certified to use the Digital Media Lab - Learn how to record a video, edit the video and use a green screen to add background effects. If you need a different class time, let us know. You must have a parent present if you are under 16. Once you have completed the certification class, you can use the Digital Media Lab at Steele independently.

Stop by the Tinker Lab to take a class or use the lab equipment independently anytime the lab is open. The 3D Print of the Month is a Star Wars Rebel Emblem (only on May 4th). One free per patron, $0.25 for each additional print.

The Teen Writers' Group Zine Release Party will be on May 23rd at 6:30pm. Our teen writers' group is releasing a booklet of their best work from this year! Stuffed Animal SleepoverCelebrate Star Wars and Children's Book Week by picking up a scavenger hunt sheet in our Children's Dept., May 2-7 and then see if you can spy with your Jedi Eye the characters that are hiding; turn in the sheet for a cool prize! The rest of May the Children's staff will be busy hosting area Kindergarten classes. Kindergartners can apply for a library card and when you do, enter your name for a chance to win a Kids Kindle Fire, courtesy of the Friends of CCLD (drawing to be held in August)!

Big Flats

OrnamentAs our programming season winds down, and summer is waiting in the wings, the Big Flats staff would like to thank you for all of your support of our winter/spring programs.  We are looking forward to a fun and busy summer.

Ladies Night Out will held on May 10th, 6pm and we will be making a quilted Christmas ornament. We started the ornament series last month with the Mod Podge  fabric ornament and will continue in May with another ornament style. There is a registration for this program, because space is limited, so call 562-3300 and sign up today.

On May 24th, 6pm, join us for a night of Alvin and the Chipmunks on the big screen as we enjoy The Road Chip. Popcorn will be served and fun will be had by all.

Bookmobile

Little WomenOur book club meets the first Friday of the month at our Bulkhead stop at 1:30. This  month's meeting will be May 6th; we will be discussing Room by Emma Donoghue. For next month's discussion on June 3rd, we will be reading Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

The Bookmobile will be at the Head Start Carnival May 7th, 10am-1pm as well as the Elmira and Horseheads  Memorial Day Parades.

Free Comic Book Day

Celebrate Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7th! Local comic book shop, Heroes Your Mom Threw Out (located at 130 W 14th St, Elmira Heights, NY), will be hosting a celebration from 10:30 AM - 5 PM. Guests include master costume builder Jeff Magnussen, author Mike Raicht, Bill Giancoli and Chris Bell of Zero Comics, and more! Stop by to get your free books and join in the celebration.
