Closings - All CCLD locations will be closed on Saturday, March 25th. CCLD is co-coordinating the Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire which will take place that day at the Arnot Mall from 10am-3pm.

Twin Tiers Mini Maker Faire

Our 4th annual "making" event will be held at the Arnot Mall on March 25th, 10am-3pm. This year we are excited to announce that we are an official Mini Maker Faire and have a new event partner, SUNY Corning Community College. This event is free and intended for all ages! Check out the website for more details. If you are interested in participating in the Faire as an exhibitor or speaker, you have until March 10th to complete the Call for Makers application. http://twintiers.makerfaire.com/

CCLD Chess Challenge

ChessCCLD's 6th Annual Chess Challenge will be held on Saturday, April 1st. Although no registration is required, players should arrive early and be ready to challenge an opponent. Games will begin at 8:30am and continue throughout the day. The last game will begin at 3:30. Prizes will be awarded at 4:30.  The tournament is free and open to all ages and abilities with prizes being awarded at all levels.  It is sponsored by CCLD, Chemung Valley Chess Club with pizza donated by Vincenzo's.

All classes are free and registration is required for most. To register for Steele classes call 733-9175; for Horseheads classes call 739-4581; for Van Etten classes call 589-4755 x3. No registration required for West Elmira classes. All Steele classes take place in the Technology Training Lab.

Makerspace Certification Classes

To schedule a training session for one of our certification classes (see below), please call 607-733-6809 during the Tinker Lab's open hours, or E-mail us at: labcentral@stls.org.

Digital Media Lab Certification at Steele

Become certified to use the Digital Media Lab. You must have a parent present if you are under 16. Once you have completed the certification class, you can use the Digital Media Lab at Steele independently.

3D Printer Certification at Steele

Become certified in the use of the 3D printers at the Steele Memorial Library MakerSpace. Completion of the certification process will allow you to use the 3D printers independently. Anyone under the age of 16 will be supervised in the use of the 3D printer.

Stop by the Tinker Lab to take a class or use the lab equipment independently anytime the lab is open.

The event will be held Saturday, March 25th from 10:00am - 3:00pm. See a variety of Makers from the area displaying their work and sharing information about what they do.

*Power Tool Drag Race Workshops will be held in March!
Attend one of the workshops and we'll help you build a power tool drag racer to compete with at the Twin Tiers Maker Faire. Workshop will be:

  • Wednesday, March 8th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm
  • Saturday, March 11th from 11:00am to 1:00pm

Plarn

Artist Filomena Jack will be teaching us how to make and crochet with plarn (plastic yarn) on Saturday, March 18th from 12:30-3pm. We'll recycle plastic shopping bags and then crochet with our balls of freshly made of plarn. Don't know how to crochet? That's fine! We'll cover the basics and have a good time.  Bring a few plastic bags to recycle and scissors if you'd like. All other supplies will be provided. Space is limited so please call (607)733-9175 to sign up.

Teen Art Contest is coming!  Submit your work to teen librarian Doris Jean at Steele Library by March 31! Entries will be displayed in Steele Library during April.  Put your name and contact info with your artwork. Drawings, paintings, graphic novel and manga art are all welcome.

A special 4-week drawing skills workshop, part of our "Art Journey 2017" series, will take place on the following Thursday evenings at 6:30pm:  3/23, 3/30, 4/6 & 4/13.  The series is led by artist Wynn Yarrow.  Register for the series by calling 733-9175. This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from NYSCA's Decentralization Program, administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Be sure to look for the Bookmobile during the Horseheads St. Patrick's Day parade on March 11th at 2pm.  Our book club continues to meet on the 2nd Friday of the month at the Bulkhead stop in Southport.  We will be discussing "Defending Jacob" by William Landay this month and reading "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman to discuss in April.

In March at Horseheads, we will host a series of four Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes focusing on removing chronic pain. Also, we continue this year's Garden Series classes with Jabe Warren, Horticultural Expert. Our second of seven classes is on garden variety selection! Registration is required. Youth Art MonthMarch is National Youth Art Month, an excellent opportunity for everyone to celebrate art and the very talented young artists who will be sharing their creative works with the community. Thanks to the dedication of The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, local schools, and teachers, school students' art work will be on display at several venues including CCLD libraries.  Stop by your library to support our local young artists and enjoy their creative expressions and designs. For a list of all the venues and participants visit The Arts Council Website www.earts.org.

Wednesdays in March: Celebrate National Youth Art Month.  Visit the Van Etten Library any Wednesday in March and paint a picture on stretched canvas.
