CCLD Chess Challenge

ChessCCLD's 6th Annual Chess Challenge will be held on Saturday, April 1st. Players should arrive early and be ready to challenge an opponent. Games will begin at 8:30am and continue throughout the day. The last game will begin at 3:30. Prizes will be awarded at 4:30. The tournament is free and open to all ages and abilities with prizes being awarded at all levels. It is sponsored by Chemung Canal Trust Company with lunch donated by Wegmans & Vincenzo's. No registration required.

National Library Week will be observed April 9 - April 15 with the theme "Libraries Transform."

NLW 2017

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. A  Library Lover's gift basket will be given away at each of the 6 CCLD locations. Grand prize will be a Kindle Fire HD Tablet with Alexa. Any library patron checking out materials between Monday, April 10 and Saturday, April 15 will be entered into a drawing to win.

Technology Training at CCLD Libraries

Tech Training Lab

All classes are free and registration is required for most. To register for Steele classes call 733-9175; for Horseheads classes call 739-4581; for Van Etten classes call 589-4755 x3. No registration required for West Elmira classes. All Steele classes take place in the Technology Training Lab.

Makerspace Certification Classes

To schedule a training session for one of our certification classes (see below), please call 607-733-6809 during the Tinker Lab's open hours, or E-mail us at: labcentral@stls.org.

Digital Media Lab Certification at Steele

Become certified to use the Digital Media Lab. You must have a parent present if you are under 16. Once you have completed the certification class, you can use the Digital Media Lab at Steele independently.

3D Printer Certification at Steele

Become certified in the use of the 3D printers at the Steele Memorial Library MakerSpace. Completion of the certification process will allow you to use the 3D printers independently. Anyone under the age of 16 will be supervised in the use of the 3D printer.

ART JOURNEY 2017: Workshops in the fine arts for the armchair adventurer, with Wynn Yarrow.

Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here - In this hands-on workshop for adults and teens on April 10, 6:30pm, we will create a handmade book with pockets.  Participants will have several options for filling the pockets:  drawings, maps, postcards, letters, poetry and other mementos.  A range of decorative papers, art supplies and tools will be provided.  Students are welcome to bring additional supplies or images for personal use. Registration is required by calling 733-9175.

This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program, administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Teen Events @ Steele (12-18 yrs)

Teen Art Contest entries will be on display at Steele Library during April.  Vote for your favorite for the People's Choice award. Winners will be announced at the end of April. Prizes: Bragging rights, and small gift cards to Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

Safe ZoneA new group for LGBTQ teens and their teen allies ("Safe Zone") will meet Wednesday, April 19, 6:30pm at Steele.  Join us for support, snacks, and fun. The group is led by Kim Stanton & Anthony Novakowski of Glove House. Thanks to Glove House and the Chemung County Youth Bureau for their support!

Draw Manga & Graphic Novel art with artist Emily Swan! The series will take place Tuesday-Thursday, April 25, 26, and 27 at 6:00pm. Register ASAP for the whole series by calling 733-9175. Supplies will be provided. Bring your own art or sketches to show Emily, if you'd like.

Moana

On Tuesday, April 4, 6pm, Big Flats is having a movie and popcorn night. We will be showing the movie Moana by Disney and popcorn will be served.

Friday, April 14, 3pm, Peter Cottontail is coming down the bunny trail! That's right; it's the Big Flats Library Annual Easter Egg Hunt! Come and hunt for eggs, get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and win prizes (fun for ages 2-10). Registration is appreciated (so we have enough eggs and prizes) but not required.

The 7th annual National Bookmobile day is Wednesday, April 12th. The Bookmobile will have some treats and giveaways. It's also National Library week and we will be having a basket giveaway so come and get a good book and a chance to win.

In April at Horseheads, we continue this year's Garden Series classes with Jabe Warren, Horticultural Expert. This month we have two classes: plant propagation and container gardening! We are offering a four week T'ai Chi class series beginning Monday, May 1st! Registration will be open in April. Also, sign up to learn all about your tablet or smartphone!

Fairy GardenYouth Events @ Horseheads

In honor of National Library Week the Horseheads Free Library is celebrating all week with a J.R.R. Tolkien.  Learn about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, become an honorary Inkling, make crafts based on the stories and enjoy a performance of Bilbo's Journey: A grand story of peril, wonder and daring!  Travel with this brave little Hobbit through dangerous and wondrous terrain, and then, happily, back home again.  All ages welcome!

Earth DayEarth Day will be celebrated on April 22, 2017.  This annual event is a means to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth's environment and all living creatures. Worldwide events are held to demonstrate the immediate importance of support for environmental protection issues such as pollution, animal endangerment, deforestation, waste, & energy conservation.  Join us at the Van Etten Library the week of Earth Day for discussion of ways we can all protect the Earth and also, make an Earth Day necklace!

Friends of CCLD Book Sale 2017

The Friends of CCLD annual book sale will take place from Thursday, May 18 to Saturday, May 27 at the Arnot Mall in the store adjacent to Bon Ton (use the Ruby Tuesday mall entrance).  Sale hours are 10am-8pm except for Sunday, May 21 which will be 10am-5pm.  Saturday, May 27 is bag sale day.
