Closings & Hours Changes

All CCLD Libraries are closed for Memorial Day on May 28th.

Summer hours begin May 21st. May 19th is the last Saturday that Steele & Horseheads will be open until Fall hours begin.

Annual Chess Challenge

Chess ChallengeChemung County Library District's 7th Annual Chess Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 5th. Although no registration is required, players should arrive early and be ready to challenge an opponent. Games will begin at 8:30am and continue throughout the day. The last game will begin at 3:30. Prizes will be awarded at 4:30. The tournament is free and open to all ages and abilities with prizes being awarded at all levels.

CCLD Focus Groups (Free food!)

Focus GroupPlease join us for a focus group at the Steele Memorial Library in the large meeting room to discuss the present and the future of the Chemung County Library District.

Two sessions for your convenience (Please sign up for one per person):

Seed Lending Library at Steele

Stop by at the second floor reference desk at Steele Memorial Library and borrow some seeds!

What is a Seed Lending Library you ask? Come by and borrow up to 3 packs of seeds, and when you harvest your vegetables, herbs or flowers, save some seeds to bring back to the library for the next season!

We are featuring easy-to-grow items that will yield impressive produce and seeds! We will also have take-away articles for seed-saving. Plus, check out our seed-saving books for more information. Seed lending is also currently available from the Horseheads Free Library.

Technology Training at CCLD Libraries

Tech Training Lab

All classes are free and registration is required. To register for Steele classes call 733-9175; for Horseheads classes call 739-4581; for Van Etten classes call 589-4755 x3. All Steele classes take place in the Technology Training Lab.

Makerspace Certification Classes

3D Printer

To schedule a training session for one of our certification classes (see below), please call 607-733-6809 during the Tinker Lab's open hours, or E-mail us at: labcentral@stls.org.

Digital Media Lab Certification at Steele

Become certified to use the Digital Media Lab - Learn how to record a video, edit the video and use a green screen to add background effects. You must have a parent present if you are under 16. Once you have completed the certification class, you can use the Digital Media Lab at Steele independently.

3D Printer Certification at Steele

Become certified in the use of the 3D printers at the Steele Memorial Library Makerspace. Learn how to change filament in the printers, navigate the display menus, and utilize the slicer software for optimizing your 3D prints. Completion of the certification process will allow you to use the 3D printers independently. Anyone under the age of 16 will be supervised in the use of the 3D printer.

Tinker Lab @ Steele

Stop by the Tinker Lab to take a class or use the lab equipment independently anytime the lab is open.

Summer Maker Camp

Registration for our 3rd annual Summer Maker Camp has begun. To register call or visit the Steele Memorial Library reference desk. A registration fee of $20.00 secures your spot in camp for the week.

Camp takes place August 6 - 10.
Monday - Thursday: 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Friday: 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Friday & Saturday: 12:00PM - 4:00PM

Steele Memorial

Adult Events @ Steele

May 4th is Star Wars Day! Stop by the library for an afterhours all ages celebration starting at 6pm! Costumes are encouraged.

CarouselOn May 14th, 6:30pm, join artist Wynn Yarrow for a clay sculpture art workshop. Sculpt a carousel animal from air dried clay (local inspiriation: Eldridge Park Carousel). Intended for adults & teens. Registration is required: 733-9175.

This project is made possible, in part, with public funds from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program, administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Later this month on May 22nd, 6:30pm, attend a lightsaber training class with Ithaca Sabers! Registration is required 733-9175 (open to ages 12 through adult).

Teen Events @ Steele (12-18 yrs)

May the 4th be with youOn May 2nd our homeschool group for ages 11-18 will learn basic coding.  Join us on May 4th for an all ages Star Wars event. Teen activities include:  Lightsaber making & dueling, make BB8 pendants, snacks & games! Cosplay is encouraged! On May 22nd we will have a lightsaber combat class, based on Chinese martial arts, for teens and adults at 6:30pm (register: 733-9175).  Sketch outside with a local artist on May 21st and 24th at 6:30pm and more this month!

Big Flats

GiraffeIt's Movie and Popcorn Night again at the Big Flats Library! On Tuesday, May 8th the library will proudly present Peter Rabbit. Come and see if rascally Peter will be successful in stealing vegetables from Farmer MacGregor's garden. The movie starts at 6:00 p.m. and as always, popcorn will be served.

On May 15 at 6:00 p.m., the library will host an animal storyhour and after we will be make a stuffed giraffe. Due to space restrictions, registration is required. Call 562-3300 to get your child's name on the list.  This program will fill up quickly, please don't wait.

Before We Were YoursWe will be doing a craft to give to the Moms at the Southside Community Center on May 11th at 3pm for Mother's Day to celebrate our mothers.

The Head Start Carnival will be May 12th from 11-2pm at the EOP building. Join us for some fun games and prizes.

Our book club meets the 2nd Friday of the month at the Bulkhead stop in Southport at 1:30pm. For the month of April we read "The stars are fire" by Anita Shreve to discuss on May 11th. This month we will read "Before we were yours" by Lisa Wingate to discuss in June.

Horseheads

Adult Events @ Horseheads

In May at Horseheads, we continue this year's Garden Series classes with Jabe Warren, Horticultural Educator.  We are offering a four week T'ai Chi class series beginning Tuesday, May 8th. Also, learn all about retirement planning with financial expert Luke Harrington of H&H Financial Group. Last, sign up to learn all about your tablet or smartphone!

It’s LEGO May-nia at the Horseheads Library! Join our Library LEGO Checkout Club. Every child (under age 13) will get 3 LEGO bricks to add to our baseplate when they checkout library materials. Let’s see how big it will get!

FerdinandMother's Day is Sunday, May 13. Stop by the Van Etten library and make a Mother's Day candle--a perfect gift for mom! We will be using our creative sides to make a personal message for mom using the candle image transfer method!

Also, May 24th is NATIONAL SCAVENGER HUNT DAY! Celebrate all month! Visit the library any day in May; search & find pictures of all the hidden Animal Cracker critters and collect an Animal Cracker prize!!
